Local Government Conference 2017 Blog – Day 1 – Derby Support Staff Dispute: The Whole Story

Derby School Support staff Becky Everett and Julia Redfern have delivered speeches to the UNISON Local Government Conference explaining how the dispute has affected them and what they faced over the 73 days of industrial action. Becky and Julia were joined by Megan from Durham Teaching assistants explaining the dispute in Durham, after these speeches they all received a standing ovation.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

This short film has just been showed at the UNISON Local Government Conference fringe meeting. This film covers the journey that the School Support Staffs dispute took and how the Industrial action changed lives of our members. take time to watch this its really worth it.

Craig and Kate  have just been talking about their experiences at a well attended Fringe meeting specifically for term time working.

They went on to answer any questions this who attended the fringe meeting. Videos of these discussions and speeches will be uploaded shortly to hear in detail their stories.

Local Government Conference 2017 Blog – Day 1 – Afternoon session

This afternoons session started with an additional Annual report covering Recruitment and Organisation. Conference then moved on to the motions for the afternoon to be discussed, this covered Apprentices and Apprenticeships and new employers/new models of public service delivery. Speakers covered how important Apprentices are within a work force and it is vital to ensure a future for the business and skilled workers learning from others to ensure quality and providing young people with an opportunity to gain a worthwhile career.

Discussions also took place based on how important apprentices going UNISON is, watch this short video for more information.


Recruitment and organising Black members in the fragmented workforce and Facility time were also discussed.

These motions after discussions were passed (20,5,21,23) detail of these can be found in the document above.

Following the discussion of these motions we now moved on to the Local Government Service Group Executive Annual report focussing on Education and Children’s Services.

This is then followed by our School Support Staff presenting to the delegation their industrial action and dispute with Derby City Council following the changes to their Terms and Conditions.

A collection was held at the end of the morning session for the residents of Grenfell Tower and a total of £1369.13 was raised.

Now discussions are taking place on the motions, the crisis in social care and Organising in homeware this is not just a crisis covering budget cuts but the welfare of the employees, members and the patients and those that receive care. we heard personal and emotional accounts from those that provide and receive care and hope important that this is to them and how cuts and a reduction in the care they receive  affects their quality of life detrimentally.

Unison’s campaign video was mentioned to show how powerful this highlights the struggle of care workers and the conditions they work in.

These motions were passed (34, 22)

The Standing Orders Committee have considered moving the Housing motion and this will now be discussed this afternoons session in light of the current Social housing crisis and the Grenfell Tower tragedy.

Thats it for the morning, coming up in the afternoon session today is a presentation by our School Support Staff and a short film showing the journey they have been through.
