National Joint Council (NJC) Pay Ballot Member Meeting – 9.30am – 11am – Thursday 8 March 2018

Dear Members affected by the NJC,

The Local Government Employers have made a pay offer for 2018/20 and it is now time for you to vote through a consultative ballot on if you wish to accept the offer or not.

The Consultative Pay Ballot closes on Friday 9th March 2018, and there may be questions or queries you have regarding this new pay offer which was sent out to you on 15th February. Myself and Julie Warner will be in Go’Sasa (Relish) between 9.30am and 11am on Thursday 8th March. We will be available to answer your queries, buy you a coffee and will have copies of the ballot forms for you to fill in if you haven’t already had your say.

Please come and speak to us if there is anything you don’t understand or if you need any clarification. This is your chance to have your say about the pay offer, please use your vote in this consultative ballot.

Can you Help us End Period Poverty?

Over a women’s lifetime she will spend £5000 on sanitary products which equals around £13 every month.

Women are facing period poverty and having to choose between sanitary products for themselves or feeding the family.

Period poverty is a national shame in a wealthy country in the 21st century.

It’s National Women’s day on 8 March and we hope you will get behind our campaign to donate to our local charities who give sanitary products to girls and women here in Derby.

When you go shopping buy an extra packet of any sanitary product to donate, or, could you send a small donation and we will buy the products on your behalf.

Women’s Conference 2018 – Liverpool – Period Poverty

Over a women’s lifetime sanitary products cost more than £5000 with women spending around £13 every month. Many women face period poverty having to choose between feeding a family and sanitary products, particularly those ladies whose family rely on food banks.

Conference welcomed that:

A)   Labour reduced VAT on sanitary products from 17.5% to 5%Zero VAT rating will be introduced in 2018

B)   In August 2017 Tesco became the first UK supermarket to effectively remove VAT by cutting the price of many women’s sanitary products.

C)   A members bill in the Scottish Parliaments brought by MSP Monica Lennon could see a system of universal free access to sanitary items for women and girls in low income households began in 2017.

D)   Labour intends to end poverty if it gets into power by handing our free sanitary products in schools, food banks and homeless shelters.

Women’s conference 2018 asks the National women’s Committee to:

1)    Continue to campaign to end all poverty affecting women and girls, especially period poverty.

2)    To publicise the work of organisations supporting women facing period poverty.

3)    To encourage branches and women’s groups to donate to charities collecting sanitary products for women facing period poverty.

4)    Work with Labour Link to support campaigns in Scotland and the wider UK to period poverty.

At conference we heard that women. Women of today are going without sanitary products to feed children. Women are using cut up towels instead of sanitary products and having to wash and reuse them.  Please don’t think that this isn’t happening, it will be affecting a woman near you!
