National Delegate Conference 2017 Blog – Day 2 – Afternoon Session

Following the collection at the end of the first part of the conference £1608.30 was raised for the Red Cross, where money will be distributed to support the victims of  the terrorist attack in Manchester, London Bridge, Finsbury Park and the Grenfell Tower Tragedy.

This afternoons business has begun and the first motion of discussion was on “Getting the public on our side – public service campaigning” this motion was passed and seeks to

Now that this afternoons motions have been discussed the conference moves on to the remaining order of business, other wise known as “The Snake” which contains motions to be discussed if the main conference business has been discussed.

As a branch we had the opportunity to prioritise motions to move up the snake we have prioritised the following:

40 – Public Service Champions Recruitment Camp
85 – Standing together in LGBT Equality
37 – Housing Associations and Charities that refuse to recognise Trade Unions
50 – Universal Basic Income
36 – Why we need to Build a new Housing Consensus for Affordable and Decent Homes for all

The first motion being discussed from “the snake” is “Challenging Racism and Xenophobia” this discussion provided some emotional accounts of delegates who have faced workplace racism, islamaphobia, and xenophobia. this motion was carried. “Race Inequality in the Workplace” was the next motion to be discussed and following on from the previous motions emotive accounts, more speakers gave examples of issues they faced that were not acceptable in the workplace and that this motion seeks to tackle this. this motion was carried.

The motion “Tackling Stress” was discussed that speakers highlighted their own personal stories to show how relevant that this motion is in the current climate and how restructures and lower staffing levels in organisations in the public and private sector have on employees who have to take on additional work pressures and working hours. This motion was carried.

“Dying to Work Campaign” motion I brought to the conference and is being discussed and looks to support Terminally Ill workers inline with those covered by the Pregnancy/Maternity Rights, protect death in service benefits, and allow workers with terminally illness to die in dignity. Emotional personal accounts were given on the importance of discussing this motion. This was carried. special mention went to the “There for you” a charity that can support UNISON Members and more detail and all their support services can be found here:

National Delegate Conference 2017 Blog – Day 2 – Morning Session

Carol Sewell welcomed all back to the conference, now the standing orders committee

The Red Cross will be the nominated charity for the collection at the end of the conference.

Questions are currently being raised regarding todays Standing orders committee report No 4, updates and responses will be issued later in the day.

Carol Sewell presented the Young Members Organising Award to the Scottish Young Members.

This was awarded for their anti-bullying campaign.

 

 

Now discussions move on to motions, the first one to be discussed for today is “Activity-Based Budgeting” this raised some passionate accounts and support for this motion to be carried, this motion was passed but there was some confusion as to what was being voted on. 0finally the motion was carried.

“Developing an Organising Branch” was the next motion to be discussed and was carried.

Now “Organising and growing our membership in private contractors”  Is being discussed  and has been carried, more information on these mortions can be found in the conference document above.

before the next motion, conference was shown the following Social Care video highlighting the struggles of care workers.

The next motion to be discussed is “An Organising Strategy for the Social Care Workforce” this motion was passed and the conference will now reconvene this afternoon.

National Delegate Conference 2017 Blog – Day 1 – Afternoon Session

The SOC Committee reported back the outcome of the referenced back items from their report and items to be resent back to the SOC to return and update their report later today.

Now the debate continues for the Motion “Pay – Tackling In-Work Poverty” this motion seeks to continue campaigning for an end to the public sector pay cap, campaign against the cuts to social security such as tax credits and universal credit, expose the wider impact that low pay is having  on our public services. campaign for the real living wage foundation, and other issues. This motion was carried with amendments

“UNISON and the WASPI Campaign” is the next motion to be discussed. WASPI stands for Women Against State Pensions Inequality, this motion was passed, to find out more about their campaign below. This motion was carried.

 

 

 

 

 

Dave Prentis UNISON General Secretary now delivers a speech covering the current political situation, industrial action including School Support Staff in Derby, pays tribute to the victims of the recent tragedies and the public service staff that worked to support those affected by this. Dave went on to pay tribute to Eric Roberts who sadly passed away last year. He went on to say you can watch his speech here below.

We now move on to discussions on Composite C – Health and Social Care Integration. You can read more about this composite by clicking on the document here…

This Composite was carried, as this has been carried  Motion 32 falls which asks for a specific conference for Social Care, it is felt that the Composite covers all issues raised.

 

 

The topic continues on Social Care to discuss the motion “The Crisis in. Health and Social Care” this motion and all motions put forward to the National Delegate Conference can be read in the document  here.

This motion was carried.

“STPs – The future of the NHS?” motion is now being discussed this has been carried.
