Local Government Conference 2017 Blog – Day 1 – Afternoon session

This afternoons session started with an additional Annual report covering Recruitment and Organisation. Conference then moved on to the motions for the afternoon to be discussed, this covered Apprentices and Apprenticeships and new employers/new models of public service delivery. Speakers covered how important Apprentices are within a work force and it is vital to ensure a future for the business and skilled workers learning from others to ensure quality and providing young people with an opportunity to gain a worthwhile career.

Discussions also took place based on how important apprentices going UNISON is, watch this short video for more information.


Recruitment and organising Black members in the fragmented workforce and Facility time were also discussed.

These motions after discussions were passed (20,5,21,23) detail of these can be found in the document above.

Following the discussion of these motions we now moved on to the Local Government Service Group Executive Annual report focussing on Education and Children’s Services.

This is then followed by our School Support Staff presenting to the delegation their industrial action and dispute with Derby City Council following the changes to their Terms and Conditions.

A collection was held at the end of the morning session for the residents of Grenfell Tower and a total of £1369.13 was raised.
