UNISON National Delegate Conference 2022 – Morning Session Day 1

This mornings session we were welcomed to conference and we paid respect to those we’ve sadly lost our the past few years and friends and families.

The first order of business was the Standing orders committee report No. 1 and standing orders report No. 2 and these were both carried. There were questions raised with regard to the report of the standing orders committee and where questions couldn’t be answered a meeting will be set up with the committee during committee.

We received the first part of Annual Report 2021/2022. and all sections were received and approved by conference. A minutes silence was held for the anniversary of the Grenfel Tower fire to remember those that were lost.

We now receive the Financial report this report was approved by conference and you can read this in more detail below.

The president gave a speech, a number of delegates left the conference floor when the president started his speech.

We now move to a discussion of motions the first motion is Motion 15 – UNISON at 30, this motion looks to celebrate the work that UNISON has done over the past 30 years ad continue to do so. we hear from speakers in support of this motion on how much unison has done for its members. This motion was carried.

UNISON Local Government Conference 2022 – Afternoon Session Day 2

This afternoons session began with a speech by the international speaker Mehmet Bozgeyik, Co-President of the Confederation of Public Employees’ Trade Unions (KESK)

We now move onto the motions to discuss on motions on Social Care. firstly is Motion 26 – Care Workers – we hear accounts of the issues faced by care workers and that they are unfairly paid for the work that they do. This motion was carried.

This motion mentions the work carried out in Wales to improve pay rates for care workers and in seeking to establish a national forum for employers and trade unions, as happens in the NHS.

During the pandemic there was a Webinar for information and support for care workers during COVID-19 you may find this useful to watch.

At this point motions timings for discussions for speakers has changed to 4 minutes for movers and 2 minutes for speakers for and against.

We now discuss Motion 25, 25.1 and 25.2- Promote UNISON as the Union for Social Workers. this Motion was carried

Motion 23 – Health and Social Care Integration – Implications for Local Government Members, this motion was carried

During this motion a speaker brought up that in Derbyshire County Branch that 8 out of 12 day centres are due to be closed to find more about the campaign you can click on the image below

Motion 24 – LGBT+ Workers and Adult Social Care – this motion was carried

The residential ethical care charter was mentioned during this motion and if you would like to read more please click on the image below…

Motion 42 – Black Member are Vital to Local Government Structures in UNISON – this motion was carried.

Composite C – Recruiting and Organising Young Members & Activists in Local Government – this Composite motion was carried

Motion 7 – Trans Equality in Local Government – Louder And Prouder – this motion was carried

During this motion the Stonewall Workplace Trans Allies Programme was mentioned, the programme explores the steps individuals can take to be effective allies to trans people in the workplace. This Motion seeks to encourage workplaces to sign up for this programme, you can click on the image below to read more…

Motion 8 – Making 2022 the Year of Disabled Workers in Local Government Workplaces – this motion was carried.

UNISON Local Government Conference 2022 – Morning Session Day 2

The second and final day of Local Government Conference began with the Standing orders committee report

with the Local Service Champions awards. This award recognises the hard work local government workers do in their day to day role providing vital services to all.

First motion to discuss is 17 and 17.1 – School Support Staff – this motion was carried

Becky Everett your branch secretary spoke in support of this motion you can watch her speaking below. we also heard other accounts from other school support staff and the issues that they all face.

The next motion to be discussed is 22 Organising in Multi Academy Trusts – this motion was carried

Motion 16 – Term Time Working was discussed and there was some meaningful speeches made – this motion was carried

Motion 18 – Support the Mental Health of Staff in Colleges – we hear the struggles further educations workers are facing with staff and the pupils they are dealing with. this motion was carried

Motion 21 – School-Based Counselling in Every Primary and Secondary School in England is now discussed and we hear how important counselling service is needed in the school setting to support pupils. this motion was carried.

Motion 9 – Home Working and Reasonable Adjustments – this motion was carried

Motion 13 and 13.1 – Pay for Members Employed by Private Contractors Delivering Local Government Services – this motion was carried as ammended

Motion 2 and 2.1 – Mandatory Vaccinations – this motion was carried as amended

Motion 5 – Sexual Harassment Still Going Strong! – we hear accounts from those who have been affected by sexual harassment and how it needs to stop and needs to be dealt with and challenged to protect all those who face it.

This morning session comes too a close and this afternoons session starts after the lunch break.
