Local Government Conference 2017 Blog – Day 1 Welcome

Good morning everyone and welcome to the local Government Conference, the conference is underway and discussions around the final agenda and amendments.

 

 

Heres our school support staff and delegates preparing themselves in the UNIZONE on the way into conference.

 

 

 

Following the Grenfell Tower tragedy in Kensington it has been suggested to move Social Housing discussions to the end of the week, and a minutes silence was held in memory of the victims of the awful tragedy.

We now move onto the presentation of the Annual Report covering issues surrounding politics, government situation, cuts to public services, school support staff action in Derby and Durham which will be covered later in todays conference, a show of appreciation and a standing ovation was received when school support staff were invited to stand at conference.  International issues, social care, privatisation, the Grenfell Tower tragedy and that you to the hard work of unison members.

UNISON LGBT Conference 2016

The conference opened with a personal message from Dave Prentis Unison General Secretary welcoming all to the conference.  Dave pledged…

“Your union stands behind you against discrimination no matter what form it takes. We will continue to fight it alongside all of you until the stain of prejudice is finally eradicated from our society, and the equal rights of legislation are borne out through real equality across our country.”

Negotiating LGBT Equality

Discussions around UNISONS views on end of life care for LGBT people, Zero tolerance of Biphobia, UNISONS work on intersex equality, transitioning information, including private contractors members into national forum, and scrutiny in the commissioning process.

Day 4 – National Delegate Conference

Dave Prentis Leave Prentis General Secretary for UNISON gave an opening address following the announcement that the result of European Union referendum was for the UK to Leave the EU.  You can read his statement here

tmp_11043-20160624_154315754185010This mornings motions covered Strengthening our union: supporting and developing our stewards, supporting our activists who have to deal with stressful situations, European Union trade agreements.

Now onto this afternoons session discussions around Women and the State Pension, Immigration, Detention and Deportation, and Public Service Workers under Pressure.

Wendy Nichols President of UNISON gave the closing speech to officially close the and announced that Eric Roberts will take over as President for 2016/17. Eric passed on a vote of thanks to Wendy and votes of thanks are being given by other members of the Union.
